There's a couple reasons for this.
comments sections are a pain in the ass, moderating them and dealing with complaints/emails is one thing a lot of companies either can't afford to or don't want to deal with.
Offering a competing narrative on their own platform again and again makes their lazy made up journalism look bad.
Dissenter lets you leave comments on any page on the internet. Available as a browser plugin or as its own stripped down fork of Brave with it installed. I use it sometimes, pretty cool
I was looking at getting a Pittsburgh Post Gazette subscription and I saw that they only allow comments by subscribers. I assume that'd to keep track of exactly who is saying what and to hold it over your head in some way.
That said, comment sections of news sites have never been more than a dumping ground for complete retards. They're better disabled. You shouldn't be going there for discussion, you should be going there for news.
