We have to get new hardhats every so many years, they claim there no good after that. I think it's also said about bicycle helmets. Maybe it's just to sell more hats.
A lot of helmets are designed for one time absorption. I know when I was snowboarding a lot, some of my friends would get a new helmet every season because they may have hit an icy patch during a fall without realizing it. Once it is compromised even sightly it won't protect you from the big hit.
I certainly had enough bad falls on the terrain park that I'd keep a spare helmet in the car.
It could be new safety developments in the last 10 years.
With the amount of CTE that runs rampant in heavy contact sports. I'm all for reducing the amount of jelly the poor smucks have after 10 years of playing.
but part of their certification process is testing the helmets and i've seen nothing saying this brand is doing especially poorly. i think they should at least be grandfathered for all the players that have been using them for years. pretty much anyone who is still playing with them at this point has made millions and can decide for themselves whether they want to continue using them.
Schutt discontinued making the helmet three years ago because current technology had moved past it, according to the company.
I agree with you that they should be grand fathered in if the player has been wearing the helmet for years before the new rule. Kind of like how the NHL let older players go without helmets after they changed the rules that forced players to wear them.
i'm a bit confused by the wording i've seen about this. i haven't seen anything saying their helmets are testing poorly, only that they are older than 10 years old which seems like a really bullshit reason to disallow them.
