I've heard of (but not read) an alternate history book called 1632 in which an American town is Bermuda Triangle'd through time and space into the middle of the Holy Roman Empire, and they decide to kick off the American Revolution a bit early. Sounds like a good popcorn/'Murican wankfest book.

Or rather, basic knowledge of how to manufacture those things, and guns. It's a long road between turning up with a bucket of gunpowder and a bottle of penicillin; and being king.

Guns wouldn't be necessary. Gunpowder alone is all you need to destroy a city wall. A sheer show of force like blowing up a few hundred feet of stone wall would likely win you a large army in no time.

But yes, the knowledge to manufacture those would be a good idea

Now we're talking! Is that technically still one item? If so, there are probably some other things we could bring for number two. Maybe a car for transportation and some titty mags in the trunk? I doubt medieval bitches would show much skin. And we'll have this parked at a petrol station, so technically we're just bringing the whole service station back with us.

If not seeds for spices and plants that would be considered unusual. Build long term value.

If yes, a diary (to write down answers to historical questions like where Charlemagne is buried etc..) and some tools like a high intensity flashlight/megaphone/stun gun/propane torch that I could use to make people think I just enough divine powers to not try and kill me.

Which part of the Dark Ages? If it was the early part then I'd say a printing press, chemicals for making paper, and soap. Later parts maybe some battle maps to change the outcome of some wars.
