I have found that this can be a divisive topic.

I do not pay for any non-physical content, that I can think of. I have occasionally given money to content creators directly, rather than pay for something. In total, I have probably pirated tens of thousands, if not hundreds of thousands of pounds worth of content. I have only ever bought one digital album, and lost it after about 2 weeks after it disappeared from my iTunes, who then refused to give me the album again because it was a limited edition and they "didn't have it anymore". They didn't give me a refund.

I'm for piracy. Honestly they don't loose sales due to piracy. I don't think they do. Because even with piracy, I only have like 5 bands on my iPhone. I'm just to lazy to add more. Also many times I loose music because itunes re-syncs my shit. So I just stopped adding new music. Been listening to the same shit for years now. Still not paying for music and probably never will. I'd rather just live without music then pay for it honestly. To broke.

Same goes for movies and really any digital content. I'm not sure what content i'd pay for. I don't remember the last time I watched a movie/tvshow or played a game.

I have so much shows to catch up on.. supernatural,mr robot, narcos, theres probably more. It's difficult with work and school. No time for shit.

I pay for artists music that I truly appreciate and want to support/ thank for their contribution to my entertainment. I've only bought Eminem album's and the most recent was NF. Everything else is pirated. As for software, I pirate what I use for personal enjoyment but pay for professional software for the avoidance of giant fines.

Is that a possibility? I have never received any sort of notice from any ISP in the UK. I've only ever heard of one person being arrested for pirating, and that was because the guy had uploaded every single UFC.

Not necessarily speaking about an ISP being privy but more the software company finding out somehow. Mostly any software that I use in the process of making money I purchase. There are a lot of companies that can sue you if you pirate their software and then make money using it. Photoshop would be one example.

generally i think if you have the money, you ought to pay but personally, i only am willing to pay for things that i really like or will use/watch/listen to many times. an issue i have got into a number of arguments about is whether or not it is okay to ask for donations for streaming content. i view it as profiting (even if it isnt covering costs) off of other peoples' work which i have a problem with.

I don't really mind if people take donations or put ads on their sites. With the exception of maybe some indie games and musicians that aren't known well, the money is going to the people who made the thing. It's the "intermediary" who is losing out, whether it be the record label or a film distributor.

edit: Also, if they were not making money, they might not be making the content available.

I think the non-physical content is just as valuable to me as physical one. It also is expensive to create: cost of expensive AAA game is $200 million, cost of a blockbuster movie is around the same.

I have the rule: if the company gave me a reasonable opportunity to buy the product, I will buy it. I have not pirated a game in a decade (unless it was some abandonware available only at floppy disk or something).

I do sometimes pirate TV shows when the local Netflix or Hulu is not offering them. For example I would be willing to pay for premium on Hulu to watch shows legally, but Hulu will not accept Credit Card issued in foreign country. So my only way to watch a TV show is piracy, I cannot pay for it if I wanted.

I would support international agreement supporting ban on rationalization of media. From both practical perspective and ideological one - free art is important for free speech.

I will download and use whatever I am interested in.
If they provide a good product at a reasonable price, then I do pay for it. Otherwise I don't.

I'm an amateur developer myself, so I want to see the programmers and artists get paid. But if someone is trying to rip me off, I have no problems turning the tables on them. If it wasn't for piracy, the big outfits would be gouging us much harder than they do. Having piracy as an alternative turns it into a buyers market and forces the software companies to be fair, or die.

I do the same thing with movies. I got ripped off by movie studios that can make trailers for garbage look good, too many times. Now I pirate the movies, then buy them later if they deliver on what was promised. I have a large collection of unopened dvds. I have no use for the disks since I prefer to watch copies from my computer, but I do want to support the creators that don't fuck us.

In the case of music, unless it's an indie band I won't buy the albums. The bands don't get much of that money and I do not feel right about supporting that vile industry. But I do make a point of going to concerts or buying band related paraphernalia. The artists usually get a significantly larger share of the profit from those.

I do this too. If bands are making more money from touring than they are selling albums, they're going to tour a lot more.

I also apply the same logic to buying albums. The huge vinyl boom that started around 2010-11 has meant that basically every punk band is releasing vinyl again, so I buy the vinyl. There is a model I quite like that has been adopted by a few labels too. They make all of the digital downloads free - the actual mp3 files, not some iTunes bullshit - and then they sell various physical copies at a minimum price and give the option to buy it for more than that price.

I don't download often, but the majority of the stuff I do download I wasn't going to buy anyway. Once in a while, I will dl something, like it a lot, and then purchase it.

Don't even get me started on things like iTunes.

Look, if I buy a kitchen knife and then give it away that is my business.

If I copy that knife and give away a million copies, again my business.

Why should a song or movie be any different?

Not to mention Hollywood in particular has well earned a boycott, as have many musicians. Their job is to entertain, not to brainwash our children and idiot masses. I don't think they will ever figure that out, so they should never get paid.

Then there is the argument that ideas and information should be made universally available to all. And in doing so you end up with better ideas and information anyway. This has been proven to be true with Window$ vs. Linux/BSD/etc..

Besides, by the time a decent copy of a movie is available for download (post DVD release), they've made their fortune.

No guilt here.
