I didn't hear about such things until deep into my own research. Had more than a few talks with people who had doctorates in religious fields and not a single one heard of such things until they were halfway or so through their last years in college. I even wrote a research paper for a low-level class and it ended up in another class's curriculum. <shrug> Not sure if that's gonna be my claim to fame or something but whatever, right?

Isn't it relatively common for Christianity to be mixed with the occult / traditional beliefs of the "indigenous" converts?

It's more like Christianity is a thug that comes in, steals your holidays, traditions, and symbols and then kicks you out of your house only to turn it into a church.

I'm thinking of examples like Voodoo and Santeria, and there's something with Central and South American Christians that I can't think of the name of.
