In 2016, Omar ran on the Democratic–Farmer–Labor (DFL) ticket for the Minnesota House of Representatives in District 60B, which includes part of northeast Minneapolis. On August 9, Omar defeated Mohamud Noor and incumbent Phyllis Kahn in the DFL primary.[27] Her chief opponent in the general election was Republican nominee Abdimalik Askar, another activist in the Somali American community.

I actually didn't know she replaced another Somali. That district was forever changed due to the mass immigration under Barry.

Most of the Somalian immigrants are actually resettled refugees. They started being resettled in larger numbers starting in the 1990s when their civil war erupted. Similar situation to how the various groups from the Balkans were resettled in the US.

Interesting. Why? There are many countries between Somalia and the US that could have given refugee status. Why the US?
