Most of the Somalian immigrants are actually resettled refugees. They started being resettled in larger numbers starting in the 1990s when their civil war erupted. Similar situation to how the various groups from the Balkans were resettled in the US.

Interesting. Why? There are many countries between Somalia and the US that could have given refugee status. Why the US?

Maybe because the US has the reputation as being a country of immigrants? I think there are only around 100k-150k Somalian refugees living in the US currently.

That history also was before the Immigration and Nationality Act of 1965 and The Great Society welfare state. Immigration is not the same since then.

It is enough of them that they have taken over parts of Minneapolis.
