As one of his last acts, Rosselló put forward veteran politician and lawyer Pedro Pierluisi to fill the vacant secretary of state post, next in line for the governorship under the U.S. territory’s constitution.

Pierluisi is a former representative to the U.S. Congress seen by most ordinary Puerto Ricans as a conciliatory, relatively uncontroversial figure, unlikely to be met by continued street demonstrations.

Puerto Rico is not a state, why are we having Puerto Ricans serving in congress? If PR becomes the 51st state, then sure, I welcome their constituency, but otherwise they should not have dedicated US politicians.

To grab a nice credo from your countries young history: "No taxation without representation"; they are subject to US federal law, US policies, pay federal taxes and use the USD as currency, so its only natural they should have representation.

The whole situation with all the "Unincorporated territories of the United States" is dodgy as fuck anyways, reeks like proper oldschool colonialism.

It really is. Those countries/islands are all in a permanent state of limbo. No one politically even talks about those territories anymore and what to do with them. I can't remember the last time I heard a peep about PR becoming a state, been at least 5 years.
