That seems kinda crazy.

Wouldn't most of them be pulling from the same reservoir of oil, or are the pockets of oil really that small to necessitate wells in close proximity?

Mostly from the same. As soon as they found it, they got it as fast as possible. For many years, there were no rules. If you owned the land, you could build as many as you wanted. They still couldn't keep up with the demand.

Ah okay, so that make sense. The reason is to increase the volume of oil being extracted.

I grew up seeing those oil derricks in long beach,santa fa springs and whittier, if you drive down brea blvd today you still see a few, and here

I've been to signal hill. Really nice houses in the residential area with the smaller pumps spread throughout the middle of the neighborhood. Weird shit.

Also the Huntington Beach coastline has oil rigs everywhere. Also very strange to see in a beach town
