I don't know much about these, anyone care to explain?

It is part of a nebula. The pillars look really dramatic and beautiful, so the pillars became very iconic.

Each tower is about four light-years high. The nebulas are where stars form, and star form all the heavier elements, so the name pillars of creation is appropriate, and somewhat poetic.

By now, they are already destroyed and the dust composing them is blown away. Yet we see them as they were 7000 years ago due to the distance.

I believe dust clouds like that expand at something like 1 billion miles per second(?).
