i appreciate the dedication to efficiency but i think strictly thinking long term for a project with mere months of funding is foolish. unpopular, underutilized, and inefficient features can always be turned off but allowing a captivated user base to slip through your fingers is voat's doom. more ought to be done to differentiate phuks from reddit and voat, particularly in ways that make a user want to contribute without punishing them for lurking.

I agree. It is basically a clone at this point, with nothing that really separates Phuks from either of them. Polsaker had a great idea for IM between users to replace PM's, which is a unique feature on any aggregator site as far as I know. Proposed changes to the voting system and different ways to deal with moderators, plus the proposed hierarchy system could be a way to set Phuks apart from the crowd. And all of those things would have minimal impact on the actual performance of the site.

those ideas may have minimal impact on performance but they have no impact on encouraging and expanding visible use. if anything they discourage use by bringing more of the site behind the scenes and/or making things more ambiguous. i'm not saying this badge idea is good but if those are the key features we're looking at, we'll be back on voat or reddit in 6 months. new features need to focus on content creation, not convoluted ways to organize the site.

there's not enough content to bother organizing it differently. theres not enough users who arent willing to use irc for an IM system to be worth the time. modifications to voting and mods will definitely turn some users off to the site, whichever way we go.

I think you misunderstand the IM thing. It would be on the site, and would replace PM's. Basically, it would work using the same thing that updates posts and vote scores. Kind of similar to the chatroom thing voat tried, but between all users. It could have a group creation feature, which would be useful for mods to talk about something going on on their sub, for example. Rather than drive people off the site, it would keep people on the site, because they would be able to communicate without using IRC (WorldPowers on Reddit comes to mind, among other subs).

I completely disagree. No improvements need to be made to posting/commenting/content creation. It is the one thing we should be keeping the same as other sites. Making it familiar will make it easy for people to post things, and keep content production up more than anything else.

The voting system is fundamentally broken. I think it is impossible to argue otherwise, given what we've seen happen on Reddit and Voat. I have said before that I would be in favour of scrapping it completely if it wasn't for the function it performs in sorting posts. Votes should be treated like currency, and based on the XP system. Severely limiting them will stop massive brigades and also make users think more about what they vote on. It may not boost the amount of content, but it should improve the quality.

Mods are also a problem. People complaining about mods are also a problem, because it leads to witch hunting and the formation of SRS-ish groups. In my opinion, we should ban these types of subs completely, and put something in place to replace the function they try to provide. One possibility for this could be a report system for deletions and other mod abuses. Make a page so founders, sr admins, admins and jr admins can see all of the reports and have discussions about them, and possibly take action by removing mods or undeleting content. There is a task for such a hierarchy system on phab, but it is far from being implemented yet.
