Nidhogg 2

Genre: Platformer/Fighting

If you didn't play the first Nidhogg game, it's one of those "I need something to play for 20 minutes" games. It's a little 2D platformer/fighting game. You control a guy with a sword, fight another guy with a sword on the other side of the screen and then run past him. Then you'll appear on the next screen and do the same thing. Each player respawns a few seconds after death, so you have 2-3 chances to stop the other player getting to the next screen. When you get to the last screen, you win, then you run to the end and are inexplicably devoured by a large worm.

The gameplay is very basic, but the way it is set up makes it kind of frantic and fun to play. Nidhogg 2 introduced a few things like improved art, basic character customisation and some new weapons, but its very similar to the first game. I actually preferred the style of the first game, it looks Atari-ish but with a few more pixels. There is a local multiplayer mode and a CPU arcade mode.

Do not buy this game if you want it, pirate it. I think it is about 13 dollars, and the first game was 10. I completed the arcade mode in just over 20 minutes, so it really isn't worth the price. Fun little game though.

Cold Waters

Genre: Submarine Sim

If you played the Silent Hunter series, you will probably like this game. There are two campaigns - a US one in the 80s and a Soviet one based in the 60s. I'll be completely honest, it's hard as shit. There is a tutorial and a lot of in game documentation, but as you start the game you will be dropped in without much explanation. I had to restart the game a few times before I could complete a battle without getting completely rekt.

I think this game is still in alpha, and you can kind of tell because it isn't that polished. The gameplay is pretty solid though and there are a lot of mechanics that keep the battles interesting. It requires a lot of concentration and you're rewarded for taking it slow and trying to plan out what you're going to do. If you just start shooting torpedoes and missiles everywhere, you will most likely miss every single one of them and then get blown to bits.

If development on this game continues, it could be the best submarine sim out there.

Darkwood

Steam Link

Genre: Horror/Survival

I played the prologue part of this game, noped the fuck out and haven't played it since. It reminds me a little of a game called Subterrain. Subterrain is a top down 2D shooter with an emphasis on survival/resource gathering, with a sci-fi setting. Darkwood has a few resemblances, but as far as I can tell it is based more on problem solving and survival, with less emphasis on combat. The art style is very dark, and it is sometimes difficult to tell what you're looking at. That is a plus though, because it makes the game way scarier. It also has that thing where things outside of your field of view aren't visible, which makes it a little bit nerve racking when you're exploring rooms. Apparently it is open world too, and there are options to barricade doors and stuff so there maybe a little bit of base building involved. There is no pause either, so when you're crafting an item or doing anything in-game, you are open to attack constantly.

At the end of the prologue, I audibly said "nonononononono, FUCK".

10/10 would soil self again.

Sine Mora Ex

I mentioned this in my last post, but I have played it now so I can say more about it.

It isn't good. There is a story mode and an arcade mode. I played the story mode, and it has a massive problem that really kills the gameplay. When you progress to the next screen/shooting part, it is similar to arcade shooters like Time Crisis where you have that transition. But the transition takes fucking ages. They are clearly aware of this problem too, because you have the option to hold space bar and speed through it. If you choose to do that, you will miss massive parts of the storyline. Maybe there is no issue with the arcade mode, but the gameplay wasn't fun enough to make me want to try it out.

The game is just not fast paced enough. If you want a dose of bullet hell, play 1943 on NES because it is more fun than this piece of shit.

Genre: Online Fighting

PVP martial arts. I know nothing about this game but I watched a stream of it half an hour ago and it looks promising. Not really my thing, but the combat system seems fluid and I like the art style.

Damnit, why is Cold Waters single player only. I want a legit multiplayer game with subs, like either sub v sub or work them into a game like World of Warships

I think a Guns of Icarus style multiplayer sub game would work. Cold Waters is in third person, you don't see anything inside the sub.

If you locked it to first person and had a bunch of people running around the sub trying to navigate and find targets, I think it would make the tension/isolation a larger part of the game. Also I like the idea of having a battle "map" based purely on readings from things on the sub. Cold Waters has a lot of that, but locking it exclusively to the interior of the sub would make communication essential.

So basically Star Trek: Bridge Crew in a sub. Everyone's job would legitimately be difficult and a necessity for survival. That would be fucking awesome.
