I tried making French onion soup, but ended up with a bowl I cannot touch because the heat will not dissipate

I could not grab the bowl without 2 hot pad silicon thingies. I don't think a few ice cubes would help. I think I need to just Cook the soup, add bread and cheese then toast until it melts and not a second longer
