Traveling tends to identify food conventions as arbitrary and illogical - why do people add sugar to bread (either as an ingredient or topping)? If you're concerned about society's sugar intake, raisins are probably not the logical place to start.

Yeah true, the sugar content in those baked beans probably surpass the raisins by an order of magnitude.

As to why people add sugar to baked goods, the yeast should get a good last meal before you kill it
