I have been using a lump of dough from the last batch of bread instead of yeast. It was an experiment to see if a sourdough colony would develop. I baked a loaf of bread with it but forgot to take a lump of dough for the next batch.
I hoped some of the colony was still alive or dormant in the dried crumbs stuck to the container I stored the dough lump in. I mixed a lump of new dough with the crumbs but there hasn't been any activity yet.
:-)
