Free speech on social media isn't necessarily a good thing when it's directly tied to your full name.

Google tried that with Google Plus.

Look where it ended.

Anonymity protects many from prosecution and persecution. It isn't evil, it's a tool.

So I suppose it's up to people to use it responsibly.

That's always been the case. I post as me at several sites and most people who subscribe to my blog know who I am. But everywhere else gets no more than a first name.

The issue of job loss or even imprisonment is very real in many areas. Employers don't take kindly to politically-minded employees who have opposing views. There are enough governments that either jail or disappear dissenting people that anonymity isn't a joke.
