I had hip surgery in December and gained an unreal twenty to thirty pounds with (self) medicated pain management and the inability to move.

In an attempt to lose weight I had given up drinking but it seemed to have made barely a dent.

I got back on the scale this morning after a few weeks and found my weight has not changed despite me not eating at night. I tell you ladies and gentlemen, when you hit 50 your body becomes the stupidity machine.

Thus I am returning to fasting with something radical, simply because I am really really pissed off at my body. I am fasting every other day. I guess that would be the 5-2 method. I have been trying the 20 hour method but that is NOT working as stated above, so I am doing it hard-core.

If family wishes to go out and eat or do a funch (fun lunch- my five year olds favorite kind of meal) I will eat but avoid carbs and TRY to stay within a 1500 calorie limit.

Oh yeah, on feast days I plan to stick to 1500 calories. Take that Stupidity Machine!

Did I mention I gave up drinking until I reach a blessed and sacred 199 pds.

In the end you'll have to try out what works for you as there is no silver bullet which works for everyone.

I am fasting every other day.

I know several people who lost weight using that method.

What's your drink, and how often is the family fun lunch?

What ISN'T my drink! I have hovered from rum to vodka to beer to tequila. Insane amount of drinking to be honest. The Funch, the fun lunch, is usually about once or twice a week.

But as the years have gone by, the consequences of the drink is pretty damn unbelievable. So now here I am seventy pounds away from my next damn drink.

Damn my birthday came and I spent it drowning in tequila. I am up to 271.8. The stupidity machine continues its blind wrath, may it end in a damn heart attack.

How can there by skinny damn alcoholics?

There was an interesting bit of advice I'd seen once:

Avoid setting goals. If you set a goal, then you fail to reach the goal every single day until you do. When you get on the scale tomorrow, you will have failed to reach 199. And when you get on the scale the next day, you'll have failed again. It is a grueling grind of discouragement the whole time. The discipline is hard, and when you hit your goal most people will relax their standards (especially with such a demanding technique) and end up back where they started.

So instead take small, repeatable steps and build on it. i.e. instead of counting calories, just resolve to eat a meal a day that is smaller than what you want. You get a tiny bit of satisfaction for that small act of self control, instead of being mildly disappointed in yourself every day that you haven't hit your goals. Then improve the quality of your snacking. Then make it two meals. That sort of thing.

  • You are right and I think I will be doing a little bit of both. I will be setting small goals to the big goal. But I will be mindful of what I am eating (I confess, perhaps I gained weight this week because I was trying to get rid of the graduation party potato salad- damn it is good) and do better.
  • I plan on reporting in from here and there and hope that some day, far away, I can have a drink at 199 pounds.
