Obviously the tank in the car must be corresponding.

Aren't diesel handles usually green? Changing nozzles and receivers would cost an unbelievably huge sum of money just to protect a few dim bulbs from accidentally using the incorrect fuel.

My freind had the experience were the gas station attendant swapped it. They had to call a tow truck, got it in the service, and the gas station payed around $1000 in cost. The rest of the plans for the day were gone.

There is a huge cost for fuckup. I subscribe to poka-yoke philosophy of design: create stuff so that operator's mistake cannot happen/has no serious consequences.

When there is a human, there can be a mistake. Even most intelligent people make dumb mistakes like swapping two things.

The diesel handles are black, the unleaded gas are green. The leaded gas (when it was still used) was marked as red.

As THC said, the costs to implement this would be astronomical, perhaps to the point of impracticality.

I can draw a crude comparison with a current situation in the UK. We are changing the shape of our pound coin slightly, and it is going to cost a lot of money for a couple of different reasons. One is changing the coin itself, another is changing everything that handles pound coins. The BPA has said that the cost of changing parking meters is going to be about 50 million, but there are other things like vending machines that will also need to be changed.

Changing the nozzles will mean changing all vehicles, not just the nozzles. I have no idea how much it would cost but it would not be cheap.

They're difference sizes. I think you can put gasoline into a diesel spout, but not vice versa. Usually the handles will be green for diesel and any other color for gasoline.

EDIT: You should also, like, read. It should be obvious if you look at it for a moment. You should know what your car needs by name.

Nope, they are anatomically the same. Black is for diesel though. But it is easy mistake for absent-minded person who needs to make a phonecall or needs to pee!

Imagine how elegant it would be to have one nozzle triangular and other cross-section.

Imagine how elegant it wouldn't be to fight with your fuel nozzle to get it properly aligned. Ever try to plug in a USB and it takes 3 tries to get it because you try it once, doesn't work, flip and try, nope, flip and try, works now. People will now be doing that with their fuel nozzles.

I think round is the way to go, change it in a different way.

We should revoke the drivers licenses of anyone who struggles to tell the difference as they are now.
