my friend of about 8 years got pulled over for the FIRST time yesterday. He was going 150kmh in a 100kmh zone (highway)

the officer only caught him going 130. So okay, whatever

cop ran his license, car is paid, insurance is paid, yada yada yada. he let him off without a ticket. no court date, no mandatory 7day impound, not even a suspension. 'Drive save, Mr. B'

I get it, my city just had a terrorist attack, and there's murders and gun violence, BUT JESUS CHRIST, COP.

and no, my friend wouldn't tell me the officer's name. for obvious reasons.

meanwhile, me, a caucasian female looking wayy too young for my age, would get tickets for not stopping long enough at a damn stop sign.

i quit.

I've been pulled over often. I've never paid full price on a ticket. Often they will let me off with a warning, other times they just reduce the fine. I also have family in law enforcement. So I know the 'tricks'.

Fines are entirely up to the cops discretion. They have no legal obligation to hand them out, even if they see a violation in action. If the person being pulled over is friendly, honest, and prepared, they will rarely get a full value ticket. I never have.
It has nothing to do with race or gender, most of the time. Anecdotally, I have heard that women are more likely to be cold/angry, or to try and flirt.
If you're a woman, never try to flirt your way out of a cop encounter. They know what you are doing and will be forced to give the full fine to avoid repercussions.

There are a number of other factors that range from quotas (that supposedly don't exist, but they do), a bad day, training, and many others.
They are people, some good some bad, and all make mistakes.

True story, @goatsshadow can vouch.

it was my 22nd birthday, I was driving my Camaro down Derry Rd, I believe on my way to work. I got pulled over, and I was recording myself (I've had bad experiences with cops. and Men in general) and i was literally telling the guy 'its my birthday, I know my sticker needs to be upgraded. I was JUST pulled over yesterday, and im waiting for my paycheque. here is my license and insurance.'

THE GUY LITERALLY CAME BACK TO MY CAR AND WAS LIKE 'sorry I ruined your birthday. here's a ticket for (bullshit reason)'

I ended up just paying it to get it over with. I don't trust the police. I've caught so many of them in contempt during co-op and work hearings.

Some, ill agree, are nice, but the douchebags outweigh the genuine officers who just want to have a good day and go home after their shift.

That's part of the problem. Don't make excuses or try to 'explain'. They will give you a ticket if you do, to make it clear to you that the excuse doesn't cut it.

Just admit the fault and accept responsibility, and don't ask for a break. Make it clear that you know you were in the wrong. Even if you are right.
Smile and apologize.

Trust me, I learned this originally from my mother, who has a lead foot, and I have used/abused it often. She's never paid full price on a ticket either.
It is not possible to argue or explain your way out of a ticket, and attempting to ensures that you will not be let off.

do you mind if I take this quote and use it in my next lesson plan for Small Claims?

I feel stupid for not knowing, but You learn something new everyday!

Why would you quit the legal profession over something as petty. Black, white, male, female, cops often leave people off with a warning. (And no, I'm not a cop, never have been, and have no close family relatives that are). To me, it's simple discretion. Much has to do with a person's attitude, I'd guess. Much would also have to do with the situation at the time. You don't have enough information to make an important life decision based on something so insignificant. For all you know, there was a major traffic accident a mile away that the cop needed to respond to. Thus he/she prioritized, warning this friend so that he/she could disengage to get to where he/she was really needed. Or maybe he/she was just being decent to someone who'd been decent and non-combatant with them. We just don't know. Like I said ... discretion, ya just don't know enough background to be angry about someone else's lucky break. Certainly not enough to throw away a career over something as trivial, unless, of course, you weren't interested in the legal profession anyway ... in which case, you're just looking for a way out and have found your door.

I don't mean to sound all uppity ... it just seems odd that anyone would make a major life decision without knowing all the facts and just assuming the system is rotten because your friend wasn't punished to your personal satisfaction.

Sorry if I took you serious and you weren't ... LOL. It's early morning for me and I haven't had enough coffee yet, I suppose. I was more concerned you were 'seriously' considering a life change over an petty incident. I have two daughters myself ... and sometimes the father in me comes out when it likely shouldn't. Forgive me.

Understandable. I should mention I had to deal with a bullshit appeal, and dealing with an assault with an alcoholic.

Never a bad time to be a dad! You never know when someone needs a dose of reality.

its not about his race, but you did make a point about it last night when I told you.

goes hand in hand.

It has nothing to do with his race. Enough with the racial profiling.
