Hm. Every couple of years this topic comes up like clockwork. On paper it's a wonderful idea but as you say, it's damn near impossible to get to a reasonable efficiency. I have heard that there are supplemental technologies emerging that could make hydrogen processing more efficient but realistically that is still 5-10 years away at best. Heck, likely they will still be 5-10 years away when that time comes.

Compressing hydrogen is very energy intensive. Until an efficient method can be massed produced its better to generate it on-site for immediate use.
