Compressing hydrogen is very energy intensive. Until an efficient method can be massed produced its better to generate it on-site for immediate use.

Hm. Every couple of years this topic comes up like clockwork. On paper it's a wonderful idea but as you say, it's damn near impossible to get to a reasonable efficiency. I have heard that there are supplemental technologies emerging that could make hydrogen processing more efficient but realistically that is still 5-10 years away at best. Heck, likely they will still be 5-10 years away when that time comes.

That is the hold-up at this point. All the various technologies exist, but none are profitably efficiant yet.
At 6:00 of the video they touch on that and a new method that may achieve profitability.

I watched it. The problem is the fundamental limit for hydrogen compression. A lot of work has been done in all the areas surrounding it but nobody has solved the keystone.
