I think we're looking at federal agencies scrambling to do a job they aren't really meant to do, because local government has left them to fill a massive void.

If by some poor chain of events I found myself out on the street at 2am, during a riot, I'd prefer to encounter uniformed DHS agents than the mob.

But interviews conducted by OPB show officers are also detaining people on Portland streets who aren’t near federal property, nor is it clear that all of the people being arrested have engaged in criminal activity.

This is the bigger issue. They are using the grey areas around detainments (mainly length of time before charges are required) at a time when people are already protesting police tactics. I have a feeling that there will be lawsuits over the legality of these detainments and those lawsuits will probably be combined to go all the way to the Supreme Court. If it reaches the current panel of Justices it may not end well for Trump's administration.

Sadly many people, especially among those who claim they support civil liberties and display the Gadsden Flag, are cheering these tactics instead of condemning them.

The truncheon and riot shield are far less oppressive, but police are now being denied that one.

It's not ideal, but the Gadsden crowd recognize that BLM is a far bigger threat to civil liberties than the police could ever be.

BLM is a bigger threat at the moment but the police have the state behind them so definitely have far more capability to be a threat to civil liberties

Not sure how BLM is a bigger threat to civil liberties when historically the biggest threat has always been governments. The Founding Fathers understood that so they tried to limit the federal government's ability to infringe on them by creating the Constitution.

I'm pretty sure they're talking about the incident below in which someone got hit in the face with I believe a rubber bullet (they say impact munition, I'm not exactly sure if that's lingo from rubber bullet).

I'm not a fan of the idea of federal officers kidnapping people off the street, I believe in respecting their first amendment right to peacefully assemble however I also see a situation where they are trying to police an area and restore calm to a place that is essentially a war zone. It seems like they are trying to arrest people but because the court house is no longer operational and the local police have been given orders not to intervene so they're just trying to get people off the streets temporarily because that's all they can do without transporting them to the nearest federal prison.
