Logic tells me this was not likely the case lets look at the facts:

  1. He was a political cartoonist for 25 years at a newspaper
  2. Negative coverage/criticism of President Trump in mainstream media is more the standard than the exception http://www.journalism.org/2017/10/02/covering-president-trump-in-a-polarized-media-environment/

Breaking this down

  1. He is in an industry that has been steadily dying over the last 25 years (lower cashflows for the industry)
  2. The product he creates is easily substituted online for free with bigger names and better quality work
  3. Having been with the company for 25 years he is likely one of the higher paid cartoonists, however he does not have a name that carries weight beyond the local market (he's a costly employee)
  4. The only major instance of Trump criticism costing a job has been the Kathy Griffin thing and she's bounced back

Then we get to this tidbit:

Editorial director Keith Burris, whom the paper said “killed” cartoons by Rogers, was quoted as saying Rogers had been offered a new contract and that a “middle way” had been looked for, only for Rogers to be unwilling to “collaborate”.

So what I pieced together is that paper was probably trying to cut costs because it is likely they're not doing so great financially, the cartoonist who's lazy work isn't really making them any more money than they would without him still wants to get paid the same amount even though the value of his product has sharply declined in value for the company. The company attempting to do the right thing offers him a new contract at what is likely a reasonable price instead of outright replacing him for someone much cheaper or picking up a nationally syndicated cartoonist. Stupid overestimates his value/leverage and makes some bullshit up so he can play victim and now attempting to get ma$$ $ympathy by pandering to the sentiment of the majority the mainstream media while positioning himself as an underdog.

He's a political cartoonist who has already had a lot of anti-Trump cartoons "killed." Apparently he can't or won't deliver what his employer expects of him.

He's been drawing a lot of anti-Trump cartoons, yet when he gets fired he and his friends and fans scream "We need his voice!" because, you know, most of Hollywood and more than half the media trashing Trump every single day just isn't enough.
