Yeah it surprises me that they would put something in there that they legally can't do without an amendment, which involves cooperating with the states.
For voter ID I think it's only completely logical that it should be standard across the board. I mean, New York is currently requiring you to bring ID or proof of residency to get a COVID vaccine. You can vote without one, but can't get the vaccine they want everyone to take? How retarded is that?
For 15, there has already been talk that they may stack the supreme court by changing the number of justices. If they stack the house and senate too at the same time, then it's one single totalitarian regime for the next 50 years. Having a single party in control always worked so well for Russia, Germany, Iran, North Korea, China, etc.
its logical to have voter id but any hoops to jump through to get it is a poll tax and unfair for those who dont trust the government. its gotta be forceful in some way on receiving a government id not on getting one.
as for 15, thats quite a conclusion to jump to. nobody but the most extremely partisan would tolerate that and they would be overwhelmed in the next election. unless they start forcefully rejecting the validity of elections, i'm not worried about becoming a one party state.
Likely they want to pass something that would normally seem extreme, so I'm betting this bill was shoveled out there to desensitize people. Once this fails and they introduce what they wanted to do in the first place, people will be like "oh well it's not as bad as H.R. 1"
i'd be surprised if much or any of it passes the courts because of #1 but i'll throw in my two cents on some of it since they are as valuable as this writer's.
6, 7, 10 and 12 are all essentially the same thing. gotta make it a bigger number somehow, though.
mail in voting shouldnt be made permanent on the scale we saw, it was an emergency circumstance that made it necessary and that emergency should not be a problem for future federal elections. many of the rules around it should be reexamined, especially with ballot harvesting and security of the postal system, to make sure it is used appropriately going forward. early voting should be promoted more instead.
i don't see an issue with delaying results until counting is complete. i think its ridiculous to expect a city to be able to count its hundreds of thousands of votes as quickly as rural communities.
i think some sort of automatic voter registration would be good, though not one that just scrapes government databases since people might have records in multiple states.
voter id is only alright to me if it is provided at no cost and with no effort by the voter. i imagine expanding the census to include voter id picture and address updates, particularly in poor areas, and potentially making it every 4 years.
i believe republican run state legislators have gerrymandered districts to their advantage in many states, i don't believe it is up to the federal government to fix this but complaints about democrats trying to stack the congress to their favor is a pot calling a kettle black. i don't expect a change for territories' representatives in congress but even if they did, the senate rules dictate a 3/5's vote. its unreasonable to just assume they would ignore that or else they would just change the rules now using a simple majority as they have been talking about for a few months now and which still remains unlikely from what i've seen.
