I am worried that a complete breakdown in society could happen in my lifetime where no one shows up to work, armed mobs roam the streets, and the government cannot continue to operate.

Utopia is always the goal, whatever that looks like. Nihilism just has bleaker utopias.

The chaos is not not for nihilism's sake, more to cauterize the wound and let things settle.
