I am worried that a complete breakdown in society could happen in my lifetime where no one shows up to work, armed mobs roam the streets, and the government cannot continue to operate.

You're a rare one if you've been thinking of utopia lately. Chaos is just a tried-and-true way of minimising the steadily worsening damage - we don't seem to be capable of much else.
