It's terrible what happened to this woman, I would postulate that because of her age and what I've gleaned about her personality from the article there's a good chance she was extremely naive, especially for an adult. Of course, when most people think southern Italy they think "fancy vacation" and not "rape and torture" (unless Caligula is the first Italian that comes to mind).
