You probably let it ferment for too long, or left it exposed to air.

That batch was pretty complicated.
2 gallons Apple Juice
2 cups white sugar
2 cups brown sugar
1 ounce of raisins
Distillers Yeast
Combine everything and let ferment for 3 weeks. Bottle with 1tsp of sugar in each bottle and let it carbonate for about 3-7 days.
It's dry and a little sour, but its super cheap.
Edit: Make sure the apple juice doesn't have preservatives.
Not bad. I'm lazy and didn't take a hydrometer reading. But it tastes like alcohol without being overpowering.
It took me a few tries, but I finally have a recipe for apple cider that is both cheap and tastes good. This one costs me about $5 for 2 gallons.
I tried making cider once, ended up with a bottle of pretty good vinegar.
