Fucking badass.
You should check out Duke Charles de Bourgegone "The Bold" of Burgundy; or rather his failures. He eventually fought in the Burgundian Wars against Switzerland, and did very poorly, eventually resulting in his defeat; the Swiss utilized forests to ambush Charles on 3 separate occasions.
What he sometimes lacked in pure military skill, he made up for in administration of the military. He arguably assembled the greatest army western Europe had seen at the time. A powerful mix of Italian pikes, English archers, French knights, and modern artillery made his force extremely diverse and capable. He enforced rigid discipline while continuing to employ feudal recruiting and foreign mercenaries.
