The whole reason for the roll, as I understand it, is that Garrett Wang, the actor of Harry Kim, took stage combat while at university. The roll itself was not written in the script, but Garrett suggested it to the direction since he knew how to do such a thing.
It does make the scene much cooler, but the special effects guys got the timing wrong on this one. :p
