Unless they're packaging the data to give away, the app itself is probably connecting to 4square and one Google, directly. You can block that access if you try.

If you use a firewall on your phone you can block applications from reaching any server you don't want it to contact. Many Android apps seem to contact one of google many e100.net addresses. I block every one of those - there are hundreds. Beyond that, numerous applications contact FaceBook, too, even if you don't have FB installed. For example, Paypal's Venmo app tries to reach Facebook

If you let you phone connect to anywhere, your chances at privacy have decreased dramatically.
