I really don't think it was at the start. They had the best product, made open source contributions, and actually took inconvenient business stands because they were the right thing (e.g. pulling out of China because of censorship). Somewhere along the line--maybe around the time of the IPO and when they started pulling in massive ad revenue and tracking by buying doubleclick, they sold their soul to the devil.
It does just go to show you that the road to hell is paved with good intentions if even a company founded on "Don't be evil" transmogrifies to one of the most evil companies around.
