I've been reading UK politics on occasion and something I have seen popup once in a while is how the vote of Brexit should be ignored because only 51.89% of the electorate voted for it.

I believe in democracy. I am entirely a democrat within this sense. It's about as western as of an idea as steak and potatoes for dinner. It's a tenet to our supremacy and what makes us better than the Arabic world or China.

If you start ignoring election results because you don't believe the margin is large enough (without legal or constitutional backing, entirely subjective) it is the start to a dictatorship in effect. Ignoring a vote because of the margins not being large enough is the start of an array of excuses to ignore elections in their entirety.

If the Brexit vote is ignored it will show that there is no recourse in a peaceful sense against the system. It would be established that the only acceptable path for a country to go down is one determined by a group of elitist bureaucrats. They will pursue their neolib agenda and there is nothing that can be done to deviate from the path set by them. You are to accept what they tell you is good for you.

Brexit passed by 1,269,501 votes and there are suggestions to ignore that result. Why? There have been elections that have been determined by 1, 10 or even 100 people. What makes Brexit such a contentious and special issue that is immune from democracy?

It doesn't just have to be the topic of Brexit that such a precedent would impact. Any direct referenda or general election could be ignored. If the UK starts ignoring democracy in that sense there will be a domino effect in the western world. I'd hate to see it happen. Let's hope it doesn't.
