Just have always found it interesting that the steel industry doesn't actually employ that many Americans as one would assume with all the press they get.

The American Institute for International Steel, a pro-trade advocacy group, says about 142,000 Americans work in the steel industry.

Is that because they had to find other jobs when production moved overseas?

Here’s a quick link search I did about steel jobs and statistics.

The statistic represents employment figures for the U.S. iron and steel industry between 2013 and 2017. In 2017, there were 83,000 employees filling steel mill and blast furnace jobs in the United States.

Seems 142,000 might be to high a #

Dont forget automation has taken over a lot of factory jobs.

You'd probably have to look back at steel jobs pre NAFTA to get an idea of how free trade has effected the industry, automation withstanding.

Duh. That's super expensive and it takes a long time. They'd rather reopen one or buy one that already exists.

Edit: Article says 3 are being opened, one is being expanded.
