In a broad sense, people seriously don't understand the reasons behind NK backing down on nukes. They just recently had their largest nuclear test facility quite literally collapse on their heads. Every world government knows that NK is unable to actually produce viable nukes, and China isn't providing replacements anymore. All NK has left are warheads that have certainly deteriorated past reliability. This leaves NK with only one option: surrender. They're just trying to do it on their terms, as they've been trying to do for decades.

As much as I hate to admit it, the Trump administration has everything to do with this. The SK government gives Trump credit because he is currently strong-arming them into signing a peace treaty that SK has unilaterally refused since the 50's. As of three weeks ago, the US and SK are renegotiating a long-standing military cost-sharing deal representing almost a billion USD in annual handouts. Knowing how Trump negotiates, he's threatening to pull funding unless SK signs that treaty, and gives him credit for making it happen.

Mark my words: The peace treaty will be signed this year under the condition of nuclear disarmament (which has already effectively happened). The Korean peninsula will blindly sing Trump's praises for bringing peace that could have happened at any time since 1998. Within the next decade the DPRK will have a world bank within their borders.
