While this is speaking specifically about health care I thought the more general message was very good and ties into some reasons people have floated as to why the Trump alternatives weren't compelling.

Parties have periods of vigour and periods of coasting. A new idea galvanizes action and support and the party gains support but if the party cannot maintain the momentum and maintain the close read on what people want, support will atrophy and they will return to supporting the status quo.

Like the article says, a party can't keep broad support if all it does is deny or negate or oppose what others are trying to do. Even if others are doing things that need opposition, that are bad ideas, the way to gain support is to present a constructive alternative- something people can say is a better idea.
