I would say that the SMB control is harder in a speed setting than playing casually. There are little quirks like the coin room in 1-1 that are incredibly difficult to get through perfectly. I think SMB3 would be a far easier speed game control wise if it wasn't for p speed strategies. It's kind of difficult to compare SMB to any other game though because the bar is set so much higher than most other games.
I haven't played a great deal of SMW, but to me the SMB3 control is a lot easier. It's less responsive, but that lessens how specific the inputs need to be in some ways.

That's interesting, based on the quality I would have thought it was quite recent. The attention to detail in character movement and stuff was very good, it felt a lot like the original games.
I did actually try Mari0 a while ago. It was fun for 10 mins or so, but it really just made me want to play a normal Mario game. I'm really not a fan of keyboard and mouse controls for games like that. I suck at keyboard controls so much that I mapped a controller to play Quake.
The full screen one looks interesting. I think it would probably make the game a lot easier, and the same could probably be said for pretty much any sidescroller from that era. SMB in particular is a complete bitch sometimes when it comes to off screen movement though, because its a lot harder to kill your momentum than it is in any of the other games. SMB3 control is fantastic in comparison, but they screwed it up by adding p speed, which gives you no time to react to off screen stuff if you don't already know its there.
