I actually really like the x39 round. I'm just not a big fan of 5.56 outside of how much of it you can carry. x39 seems like a good in between the weight of 5/56 and punching power of x51.
Also a fan of side charging handles, lol. I got really tired of the side of my hand getting beat up at the range when I was active duty, and the side charging handles are usually beefier and dont have that shitty little lock like AR platforms.
Never used pmags. My unit was too poor (Marines and all) to buy us shit like that, and there were never army units around to steal them from. We did get seat belt cutters one time... I use a 28rd polymer mag from Molon Labe Industries. I wish magpul would make some pmags for the scar 17 though.
I wasn't a fan of pistons until I got the scar. I've cleaned plenty of AKs and hated it almost as much as ARs. I can take a scar completely down and run a cleaning rod through the entire thing, so I don't end up having to put it in a solvent take to get it clean like an AR.
As for cans, I haven't tried making my own. The scar is a bit tricky with them, and even most commercial ones dont work with it. Its hard enough to get compensation correct without a scar specific suppressor, I couldn't imagine getting timing and compensation correct with something I built myself.
