I think it adds context for new users to know how often it is used and if it's worth check or writing into.

I'd think that would be a better option. Give more room for stuff like timestamps, and I don't think you're really losing anything.
I'm not sure there is much gain in having the window nested. It's easy enough to open another window on a desktop if you want the chat open while browsing the site.
On mobile, I wouldn't even attempt to have both on the screen, so being able to have a full screen for chat might make it more viable.

we had them, but it took up a lot of room, so we removed them. Maybe dim text after XX mins or a dashed line, that might help.. or maybe hover over for last time.
