I enjoy going out shooting with my Mosin. But the cost of ammo at $18 for 20, plus the heat build up on the barrel after 50 rounds, plus the damn bruises from recoil. Have lead me to looking into something cheaper and less punishing.

I've also been interested in getting a pistol for home defense .

Does anyone have a solid combo (not that hi point $300 POS) that they would reccomend? Both chambered in the same caliber?

Unless prices have gone up since I've looked, surplus 7.62x54R is a lot cheaper than that. The Mosin is an absolute bruiser to shoot.

But by all means get a good 9MM.

$18 a box is on the higher end, but I've also seen online professional marksmen rounds for for 25-30 for 20 rounds.

The cheapest I've been able to find is about $12 for some steel cased rounds, which I think 7 of 20 failed to eject.

I've heard that they were all around a lot cheaper 15-20 years ago.
