@saverem sent me a link to download an unreleased SNES game called "Socks The Cat". It's an average at best platformer where you play as Bill Clinton's cat, but it kind of highlighted a massive issue I have with SNES games, moreso with platformers.

The character sprites are just too fucking big for the screen. How are you supposed to run through a level without knowing exactly where everything is positioned off to the side of the screen without stopping every two seconds when the screen is zoomed in so close? It isn't even just the bad or lesser known titles either.

Even games like Mega Man X have sprites way bigger than the original games on NES. It isn't that much bigger in this case, but it makes a massive difference when you take into account that there are way less screen transitions to give you time to adjust to everything on the screen. This kind of thing is ok in widescreen, but it just doesn't work in 4:3.

I guess they got carried away with the amount of detail that could be put into characters with the upgraded graphics of the SNES, without thinking about how the larger characters would affect the gameplay. Socks the Cat actually tried to compensate for this I think, by kind of moving the camera off to the side in whichever direction you face/move. I've seen this in some other SNES games and I hate it, it's just disorienting, especially if the game makes you move in different directions. Just make it smaller, fuck.

No doubt. The hit boxes are rarely the size of the characters either leaving you to guess to often as to whether or not you'll take a hit.
