I've always felt as though I'm unable to fully enjoy RPGs. Final Fantasy is one of my favourite series of games, but outside of that it's pretty limited. Undertale was probably the last RPG I played that I liked, mostly because it did something different with the combat system and the puzzle aspects weren't too over the top. I feel the same way about CrossCode, but I would put that game into a different category as it isn't a traditional RPG.
I just don't want to sink a ton of time into a game that is mostly a grind with story elements and payoffs that are few and far between when I could play a different kind of game that is at least continuously stimulating.

I put 47 hours into it between 11/2016 and 12/2016. I finished every last little bit I could at that time, then updates kept coming and I made the decision to force myself to not play them as they came. That game is just so damn good that I wan't to experience it all again, this time as a complete game. I think I was able to play through 4 (?) dungeons at that time, with 3 more having been made since then IIRC. They are still planning a Summer 2018 release, so I'm super stoked to play it again.
CrossCode seriously puts almost any other similar genre game to shame (Zelda games included).
v1.0 is not ridiculously far away.
I haven't played it since 0.8, and I actually stopped playing that before I got anywhere close to the end of the content once I realised how good the game was. I never wait until a game is out of early access, but I did with CrossCode. @Jobes has played it too, so he may know more about it than me, I think he spent a bit more time playing it.
The Owlboy devs actually coined a term for this kind of game - Hi-bit. Games like Shovel Knight, Cave Story, Sonic Mania etc. that are very much like games that appeared on NES, SNES or Genesis, but feature highly detailed pixel art and more advanced control mechanics.
I have played all of them but haven't finished any of them. I got stuck in Shovel Knight one day and just kind of forgot about it and never played it again. Cave Story was really cool, but I just sort of stopped playing it as new games came out and I started speedrunning more. Sonic Mania is a masterpiece. The Sonic games have never really interested me that much, to me they were always frustrating and mediocre as a kid, but some of the art and design in that game is fantastic.
