LOVE and kuso

Both of these are tricky platformers. The style is kind of NES-ish, and the control is very simple. You jump, move left and right and place checkpoints. I didn't play LOVE, but I just played kuso, which is a new release by the same people who made LOVE. They are both very short games, I finished kuso in an hour on first playthrough. The game lets you place your own checkpoints, which makes the game a lot easier, but is also a gameplay mechanic sometimes. If you place a checkpoint in an area and then get killed there, it will reset your checkpoint back to the start of the section you're in, so you need to be careful where you put it. Not sure about LOVE, but kuso has some optional procedural generation too. If you like games like this, I would also recommend checking out VVVVVV. Instead of a jump button, you get a gravity switch, and the puzzles are very good. It is also a decent length, and can be finished in one sitting.

OVIVO

This game is similar to VVVVVV in that you have a gravity shift - kind of. It is a 2D platformer like the other games, except you are a ball rolling through the levels. Everything is either black or white. If you're in the black, you fall up, white falls down, and you can roll normally along the line where they meet. It is very simple and probably a bit easier than the other games I mentioned. It is 1-2 hours long on first playthrough. The levels are all made up of artwork. Every level has a different scene that you roll/jump through, and at the end the camera will pan out and reveal the entire "drawing". It has a great soundtrack too.

Necrosphere

Pretty difficult, I haven't finished it yet. A lot of the difficulty stems from the bizarre controls. Double tapping a direction does a dash that also gives you a very small lift off the ground, holding left and right will activate your jetpack. There are times when you need to move in a direction, use dash and your jetpack in quick succession, and the margin for error is small. It can become one of those "where the fuck am I supposed to go" games. You have to backtrack a lot once you unlock new stuff to get to previously unreachable areas in places you're already been. After a while, Terence McKenna starts speaking. I don't know why.

140

Sort of similar to OVIVO, it's a 2D ball platformer. It is also a rhythm game, the levels and bosses have moving parts that all sync up with the soundtrack in some way. I'm not sure how long this one is because I haven't finished it. I tried twice and had to stop halfway through to go and do something, and the game has no save feature. Other than that it is pretty solid.

Cave Story+

I didn't play the first Cave Story, so I don't really know what's happening with the storyline, but the gameplay is great. It has a few similarities with Metroid, except there is less trial and error figuring out where to go. It is just the right level of hard, though there are a couple of parts that are total bullshit. I would recommend playing the first one before this one so you know what's going on. The inputs are very simple, the game can be played with an NES controller, yet there is a lot of variety in the gameplay. It has good music, but if you get stuck in one area for too long, it can get irritating.

Cave Story+ is an remake of the original Cave Story. The original is the same game with slightly less content

That makes sense, I noticed there are options for "old" music and graphics in the settings menu. I did wonder why they existed, now I know.
