Kalm is an early glimpse into the past of our characters beyond cryptic words and a short flashback when Cloud joins SOLDIER. The cutscene in the hotel is probably the first real clue that something is off about a couple of our main characters, and that there's something going on under the surface that we don't know about yet. Quite a lot of exposition occurs in a long conversation sequence within this town.
The theme of this place mirrors it's name - it's a stopping-off point before pressing on on the world map, and the simple town without much in the way of troubles or worries gives a sense of peace. The music here, composed by the venerable Nobuo Uematsu, conveys these feelings well.
