"The Commons" in today's society is social media. This is a fact.

Simo said that if a piece of content is flagged by fact-checkers as untrue, Facebook’s algorithms limit distribution so the misinformation doesn’t spread. Facebook also flags erroneous information as users attempt to share it with friends.

The folks in charge of these "common areas" of public thought and discourse are abusing their power to dictate the public narrative. This would not be remotely acceptable even if these guys had good intentions.
