While looking up information on millet, I saw two articles saying to avoid eating millet because it contains goitrogens, compounds which inhibit the thyroid and can cause goiters.
Article 1, thepaleodiet.com -- Archive, if it worked, the site serves a different style page to social media referrers
Article 2, thehealthyhomeeconomist.com -- Archive
The wikipedia article on millet contains no mention of goitrogens or any link with goiters and millet consumption.
However, the wikipedia article on goitrogens does describe exactly what the dietary articles claim, that this compound interferes with the thyroid functioning, and that millet does contain this compound.
Of course, the wikipedia article goes on to list all the other common foods that contain goitrogens, which these sites recommend eating or have no warnings to avoid. For example, soybeans, flax, peanuts, strawberries, peaches, pears, spinach, sweet potatoes, and all brassicas are all listed as containing goitrogens.
More health and diet quackery. But probably no surprise, the field is rife with it.
