Is this feature recommended or is the policy that it's required?

The reason field is required for all deletions unless you're deleting your own post.

I understand the mechanics, I was merely curious if there was a policy associated with it, or if it was optional - ie putting a few misc. characters to satisfy the required field which would be a workaround to ignore it entirely.

Yeah, sub mods can make their own rules and put whatever in that field

Is there a character minimum for the reason? Otherwise you get . as a reason.

A character minimum would serve no purpose. It is easy enough to type two or more dots, or just write nonsense.
And since mods are allowed to make any sub rules they want, they can write what they want.

The point is, they have to be open about it. A mod is allowed to be a control freak, but they can't do it while pretending not to be.

Also for people complaining why admins deleted their post. Now they can go to the site log to check why.

In the near future I'll make those deletions send a notification to the user, too.
