On the other hand the US/North America hardly import any petroleum from Russia so sanctions would be pointless.
The only way to make energy sanctions effective would be to have countries like OPEC and US ready to jump in and pick up the slack and since Russia is essentially a shadow OPEC member most OPEC countries wouldn't cross that line.. Of course the ones that would (Saudis) would have Europe at their mercy which is even worse than being at Russia's mercy.
Europe imports 26.9% of their oil and 41% of their natural gas from Russia so boycotting energy would cripple a good portion of Europe.
