it's always interesting to see the colloquialisms people use to describe a situation. It says a lot about the person.

If I were to reach for a colorful analogy, I might say "It's not like the captain was sailing the Exxon Valdez drunk."

or maybe

"It's not like the captain was more interested in downloading loli hentai over 4G while the ship was near land rather than steering the boat"

A few years back there was a train collision in California because the driver of one train was literally playing WoW and missed a red light, so that popped in my head.

The other thing I was considering saying was "It's not like the captain was steering all crazy trying to draw a penis on the GPS tracker inside the canal"

Nobody on a boat with GPS would ever draw a penis. Also no pilot would ever draw a penis. No schoolboy would ever draw a penis.
