The Curaçao government is calling on residents who have been in the vicinity of the Freewinds cruise ship to report to the GGD. A crew member of the ship, owned by the Scientology movement, has gotten measles.
The ship was off the coast of Curaçao last week, where it is located more often. It also serves as an entertainment ship for mainland residents, says correspondent Dick Drayer. "When they are in the harbor, concerts are also given, and a few dozen people come to that."
Since Monday, the Freewinds has been quarantined in the port of the Caribbean island of Saint Lucia. There are also major concerns about contamination on that island. The crew and passengers, a total of 300 people, are placed in quarantine and are not allowed to leave the ship.
Contagious
Tonight the Freewinds went back to Curaçao to go into quarantine again. Everyone is checked, only then can people disembark. The result can be there within 24 hours.
Measles are very contagious. The US is currently struggling with the worst outbreak in 25 years. More than 700 people are sick there. Since last week, more than 200 students and staff from two universities in Los Angeles have also been quarantined because they may have been infected.
There have been concerns about the arrival of measles in the Caribbean for some time, also because of the large number of Venezuelan refugees. But no contamination has yet been found on the islands.
